1. Whatever Happened to Romance?

Sitting in a café
Sipping mocha latte
Every day’s a good day
But you’re not here
Hey, whatever happened to romance?
Whatever happened to my last best chance?
Whatever happened to romance?
Now you’re the girl who doesn’t want to dance.

I can hear the music blare
Got a life I want to share
But all I see’s an empty chair
Cause you’re not here
Hey, whatever happened to romance?
Whatever happened to my last best chance?
Whatever happened to romance?
Now you’re the girl who doesn’t want to dance.

You used to laugh when I came to your door
Now you never even smile for me anymore
your heart’s not with me like before,
before…

Now I just catch you on the run
Only see you when you’re under the gun
And I’m not having any fun
Cause you’re not here
Hey, whatever happened to romance?
Whatever happened to my last best chance?
Whatever happened to romance?
Now you’re the girl who doesn’t want to dance.
Now you’re the girl who doesn’t want to dance
You used to be the girl….

2. Close Enough

Now that we’re lovers
Livin’ in our different states
We don’t have to talk around it … just tryin’ to find a way
How we’re gonna make it work across the miles ‘tween here and there
How we’re gonna do the day to day if we’re never anywhere
Close …

Baby, Let’s be close enough to dodge the cars on Highway Five
Close enough to come this far to feel like we’re alive
Close enough to share a gentle touch before we die
Maybe we’ll discover you and I
Close enough is better than goodbye

That look in your eye
The tone of your voice
Tell me that you’re thinkin’ … we might not have a choice
Maybe we can see it clear if we try not to look too far
Maybe we can share a moment riding on this shooting star
holding close, …

Baby, Let’s be close enough to dodge the cars on Highway Five
Close enough to come this far to feel like we’re alive
Close enough to share a gentle touch before we die
Maybe we’ll discover you and I
Close enough is better than goodbye

Don’t know where this journey’s goin’, or if I’m bein’ smart
But I know I’ll be on the road followin my heart

Baby, Let’s be close enough to dodge the cars on Highway Five
Close enough to come this far to feel like we’re alive
Close enough to share a gentle touch before we die
Maybe we’ll discover you and I
Close enough is better than good bye
Close enough is better than goodbye

3. Lost Angeles

Who took the T out of Lost Angeles?
I’m so lost and lonely but the angels don’t see
To get yourself found, you got to pay a fee
But in the city of angels, you get lost … for free

Came out to the coast to play a few sets
Packed up my songs and hedged all my bets
Tomorrow I’m gonna take what I can get…
But I haven’t left yesterday yet
Haven’t left yesterday …
Who took the T out of Lost Angeles?
I’m so lost and lonely but the angels don’t see
To get yourself found, you got to pay a fee
But in the city of angels, you get lost … for free

Made up my songs as I made all my rounds
But my music didn’t seem to make a sound
Thought I was up cause I was facing down
And you got to be pretty in this homely town
Got to be pretty …

Who took the T out of Lost Angeles?
I’m so lost and lonely but the angels don’t see
To get yourself found, you got to pay a fee
But in the city of angels, you get lost … for free

Fell out on the Boardwalk when times got hard
Met the ghost of Zevon on the boulevard
His songs were perfect, in the switchin yard
‘Bout wet streets and neon and tarot cards

My fame and fortune are still within reach
Long as I never leave Venice Beach
Where you play for loose change or you learn how to preach……
And every lost soul has a lesson to teach
very lost soul……

Who took the T out of Lost Angeles?
I’m so lost and lonely but the angels don’t see
To get yourself found, you got to pay a fee
But in the city of angels, you get lost …
Who took the T…..out of Lost Angeles

4. Is It Really a Lie?

You wrote me that message, but I didn’t know why
Was it straight from your heart, or just another white lie?
Since we’d gone wrong, all the good things you said
betrayed by the demons that live in your head
I’ve kept your white words… in a box, on the shelf
Is it really a lie… if you believed them yourself?

Is it really a lie … was this love ever real?
Does it mean that I have to forget all the love that I feel?

I couldn’t slow down, we were falling too fast
You burned down our bridge, stranding love in the past.
My tears couldn’t put out the flames, and our hope
Was lost, as I watched your life go up in smoke
I heard you say … you didn’t need… my help
Is it really a lie… if you believed it yourself?

Is it really a lie … was this love ever real?
I’d rather believe any lie that would save that old feeling…

I’m trying my best to keep up and move on
All the little white words …of our story are gone
Now I’m under the radar, but still on the grid
I’m living my life, but I’m keeping it hid
I’ll write a new ending … that turns out quite well
Is it really a lie if I believe it myself?
Is it really a lie… if I believe it myself?

5. Tropical Depression

Watchin rain from my front porch
Keep learning the same old lesson
Got to break loose from this old routine
I’m in a tropical depression

Been too long since the road and I
Had a top down radio session
Guitars crankin’ while I’m headin’ south
Might help this tropical depression

I want to smell the sea and hear the palm trees
Whispering their promises
I want to watch the stars and just be me
And not care what tomorrow says

Lovely ladies on the beach
Demanding my attention
Don’t matter if they’d never even speak to me
They help me out of this tropical depression

I want to smell the sea and hear the palm trees
Whispering their promises
I want to watch the stars and just be me
And not care what tomorrow says

Now I’ll stay a while in this little town
Where it’s illegal for stress or tension
Pina colada as the sun goes down
South of this tropical depression
[I’ll have a] Pina colada as the sun goes down
South of this tropical depression

6. Heartbeats Through the Wire

Just so you know
You’re making it so easy
Just so you know
I’m not trying all that hard
Just so you know
your quiet talk is pleasing
Your voice can tell the story
Of subtle southern breezes from your heart

Just so you know
You think I’m good at talking
Just so you know
You bring it out of me
Just so you know
You’re dancing while I’m walking
Your eyes can tell the story
Of a long awaited journey ‘cross the sea

We just met
At nobody’s introduction
We just met
Two heartbeats through the wire
We just met
At nobody’s introduction
Whoever said that we were
All that smart?

Just so you know
I’m thinking of you quite fondly
Just so you know
The thought snuck up on me
Just so you know
It came while I was dreaming
My heart can tell the story
Of taking that first step across the wire

We just met
At nobody’s introduction
We just met
Two heartbeats through the wire
We just met
At nobody’s introduction
Whoever thought that we would find our heart?

Just so you know
You’re making it so easy
Just so you know
I’m not trying all that hard
Just so you know
You’re making it so easy…

7. Sixty on Sixty

Rolling down that double yellow Half caffeined, semi mellow
driving Highway Sixty to that same old place
Houses that were orange groves Stare down the past, and face the road
and I turn the mirror so I don’t see the new lines on my face
…on my face

Doing sixty on sixty Looking for a saving grace
… Saving grace
Sixty on Sixty Looking for a resting place
…resting place

Thinking back to Eighty Three That big old van, just her and me
Two things on our list, Just a beach and a breeze
We looked around and wondered who Could feel the changes passing through
The other side of being young And waking up to times like these
…times like these

Doing sixty on sixty Looking for a saving grace
… Saving grace
Sixty on Sixty Looking for a resting place
…resting place

Looking back to when life was a romp And the edges of Sixty were still a swamp
When I laughed at the danger of driving off that road
Now that the blacktop covers the marsh grass the only danger is feeling the harshness
of ancient winds singing songs that I’ll never know.

Doing sixty on sixty Looking for a saving grace
… Saving grace
Sixty on Sixty Looking for a resting place
…resting place

8. Goodbye, Ms Perfect

You say you’re leavin me cause you think I don’t put you first
As you got up and stomped away, you looked at me and cursed
No wonder I can’t make myself feel like I used to do
How can you be my number one when you treat me like Number Two.

So, goodbye Ms Perfect, it’s been fun
I’m sorry if I’m not the one
You’ll be ok, just look around
You’ll find the perfect man, cause there’s one standing
On every corner downtown.

You’re mad that I’m not perfect and you’re mad when I have to go
You’re mad I don’t agree with everything you claim to know
You’ll buy a ticket to anywhere, just to get away from me
Don’t be surprised when the Friendly Skies charge you that baggage fee

So, goodbye Ms Perfect, it’s been fun
I’m sorry if I’m not the one
You’ll be ok, just look around
You’ll find the perfect man, cause there’s one standing
On every corner downtown.

You said our time’s expired, and I’ve just got to accept
This tragedy, return your key and leave with no regrets
Now I’m lookin at my wristwatch, time controlled by satellite
I named that wristwatch after you, because it’s always right

So, goodbye Ms Perfect, it’s been fun
I’m sorry if I’m not the one
You’ll be ok, just look around
You’ll find the perfect man, cause there’s one standing
On every corner downtown.
You’ll find the perfect man, cause there’s one standing
on every corner downtown

Trailing monolog:
They say that the perfect is the enemy of the good.
Well, I’m not perfect, but I am pretty good…..
what was that perfect body part that you called me? …
I might not have perfect pitch, but you can certainly be a perfect…

9. Sleepless Nights

There was a time I’d stay out til the hours were very small
In the early Springtime of my life
Thought I was so special, and could always have it all
Didn’t get much rest those sleepless nights
[all those] Sleepless nights, living different feelings
through the other half of every day.
Lived my life, didn’t know I was revealing
how the seasons might play out this way….

A woman came into my life, blessed me with her fashion
Brought the sun and made me feel so right
Summer nights we spent the darkness playing out our passion
Those were my favorite sleepless nights
[all those] Sleepless nights, living different feelings
through the other half of every day
Lived my life, didn’t know I was revealing
how the seasons might play out this way….

But seasons overtook us , and her shadows came to call
I tried so hard but couldn’t set us right
Now twilight plays upon the leaves that gather in the Fall
bringing on my saddest sleepless nights …
Twilight plays upon the leaves that gather in the Fall
bringing on my saddest sleepless nights .

10. Believer

Will it help if I pray?
I so want to know
If you can live another day
So we can learn to let you go

Used to wish I could feel
The innocence to believe
What you seem to understand
As you prepare to leave

Now, you’ve made me a believer
That there’s angels in the sky
With your saintly demeanor
And that devil in your eye

Now that we’ve shared
One last good time
I feel I understand
This fragile life you leave behind

Now, you’ve made me a believer
That there’s angels in the sky
With your saintly demeanor
And that devil in your eye

Will it help if I pray?
I don’t really know
But you’re alive with us always
And we don’t have to let you go
You’re alive with us always
And I don’t have to let you go
